Internships & Mentoring
The Internship and Mentoring programs at Carlisle Academy are created for high school students, college students, or recent graduates who wish to undergo supervised practical training in the areas of physical and occupational therapy, health and human services, or therapeutic riding certification.
Clinical Internships and Mentoring are fee-for-service programs paid to Carlisle Academy. Fees are dependent upon the number of weeks and amount of time spent per week at the center, but typically range from $50 to $100 per week. There are prerequisites and an application process that must be followed for both Internships and Mentoring.
Clinical Internships (Tuition fee applies)
Designed to bridge the classroom-to-career transition, Carlisle Academy’s Hippotherapy Program is a clinical site for Physical and Occupational Therapy students. While there is a strong clinical specialty of pediatrics in this placement, interns will have the opportunity to work with and observe adults with both physical and mental health disabilities. Internships are available for students needing as few as 20 hours and up to 12 weeks of clinical placement. Interns requiring fewer clinical hours will participate in largely observational experiences. Interns with longer clinical placements will become competent with the assessment, treatment planning, and documentation associated with the equine therapy service delivery model. They will also develop a strong appreciation of the tasks associated with managing an outpatient therapy clinic.
Educational Internships (No tuition fee)
College or high school students desiring exposure to careers in health science, human services or equine-related professions may be interested in an educational placement at Carlisle Academy. Designed to meet the individual learning objectives of each intern, this experience will provide students with supervised practical learning. Educational Internships, spanning a minimum of 5 hours per week for 14 weeks, will include: observation; participation as hippotherapy aides, therapeutic riding lesson assistants, or stable management assistants; reflective journaling; and special projects.
Internship Application Deadlines:
- February 1 for internships starting in March, April or May.
- May 1 for internships starting in July, August, September, October or November.
Therapeutic Riding Instructor Mentor Program (Tuition fee applies)
For individuals pursuing PATH certification to become Therapeutic Riding Instructors at the registered level, Carlisle Academy is in the process of developing a Mentor Program designed to support the PATH candidate’s required 25 hours of teaching.
